Recording lectures
Taking notes and following a lecture are two tasks competing for the same attention, and most students do both badly at once. Recording the class and getting the notes afterwards separates them, so the hour in the room can be spent listening.
Open Lectures and press New lecture
Lectures is in the School section; the New lecture button is at the top right of the page.
Record live, or upload a recording
You can record the class as it happens, or upload audio you already have. Either route ends in the same place.
Let it process
Processing happens in the background and the list does not update live — a lecture that finishes while the page is open appears the next time you navigate to it.
Use what comes back
A processed lecture gives you notes, a flashcard deck and a practice quiz. That order is also the order to use them in: read the notes the same day, work the cards during the week, take the quiz before the test.
Ask before you record a class
Recording a teacher without permission is against the rules at many schools and against the law in some places. This is your responsibility rather than something the app can check for you, and the usual answer from a teacher who is asked is yes.
Microphone placement matters more than anything else
A phone on the desk in front of you will beat a laptop in your bag by a wide margin. Poor audio is the single biggest cause of disappointing notes.
Common questions
How long a lecture can I upload?
A normal class period is well within range. Very long recordings take proportionally longer to process.
What if the recording is noisy?
It copes with ordinary classroom noise, but it cannot recover what was never audible. If the teacher is inaudible to you in the room, the recording will not be better.
Can I record a lecture that isn't in English?
Ask in a session before relying on it for a whole term — quality varies by language, and it is better to find that out on one class than on twelve.
