Geography help, with the map and the cross-section drawn

A contour map is the part of geography that stops most students, because a valley and a ridge look identical until you know that the V-shapes point upstream. Nearly everything else in the course works the same way: the answer is visible once the diagram is drawn correctly, and invisible in a paragraph of text.

Where students get stuck

I can't read contour lines or work out the slope

Three rules cover almost every map question. Contours close together mean a steep slope and far apart means a gentle one, because each line is a fixed rise, so spacing is the run. Where contours cross a river valley they bend into a V, and the V points upstream toward the higher ground — that single rule separates a valley from a ridge, which is the most common error on a map exercise. Closed loops mean a hill, and closed loops with small tick marks pointing inward mean a depression. To find gradient, take the height difference between two points and divide it by the ground distance between them using the scale bar, then keep the units consistent.

I mix up which plate boundary produces what

Sort them by what is being made or destroyed. At a divergent boundary crust is created, so you get rift valleys on land and mid-ocean ridges with shallow earthquakes and gentle basaltic volcanoes. At a convergent boundary crust is destroyed, but the result depends on what collides: ocean under continent gives a deep trench, a chain of explosive volcanoes and deep earthquakes; continent against continent gives high fold mountains like the Himalayas and almost no volcanism, because neither plate is dense enough to subduct. At a transform boundary crust is only moved sideways, which produces powerful earthquakes and no volcanoes at all. Volcano plus trench means subduction; earthquakes without volcanoes means transform.

Why is that particular place a desert

There are four separate mechanisms, and exam answers lose marks by naming only the first one that comes to mind. Subtropical highs near thirty degrees latitude: air that rose at the equator descends here, warming and drying, which produces the Sahara and the Australian interior. Rain shadow: air forced over a mountain range drops its moisture on the windward side and descends dry on the lee, which is what makes the interior plains east of the Rockies dry. Continentality: places far from any ocean have no moisture source. Cold ocean currents: the Humboldt Current chills air off the Peruvian coast so it cannot rise, which is why the Atacama is the driest desert on Earth. Name the mechanism, then the place.

All the population pyramids look the same to me

Read the base first, then the sides, then the dents. A wide base tapering fast means a high birth rate and high mortality, typical of a country early in the demographic transition. Near-vertical sides mean births have stabilised and most people survive to old age. A base narrower than the bars above it is the important one: births are falling and the population is ageing, which forecasts a pension and labour-force problem twenty years out. A sudden notch in one cohort marks a war, a famine or an emigration wave, and a bulge on one side of the pyramid at working age usually means labour migration. Then calculate the dependency ratio, because that is the number the question is usually driving at.

Geography questions

Can it actually draw the diagram, or just describe it?

It draws. The whiteboard is where a cross-section through a valley, a labelled plate boundary or a sketch of a rain shadow gets built while you watch, and you can stop it mid-drawing to ask what a label means. For a map you already have, share your screen or hold the atlas page up to the camera and it reads the map with you.

Is geography just memorising capital cities and rivers?

Not at the level you are being marked on. Location knowledge is the vocabulary, but the marks come from explaining processes and interpreting data — why a settlement grew where it did, what a climate graph implies about the biome, how a hazard map should change planning decisions. Flashcards handle the place names so your study time goes to the reasoning.

I have a fieldwork report and I do not know how to present the data.

Start with what your question actually asks, because that decides the graph rather than the other way around. Talk through your raw data on screen and work out which comparisons matter, then pick the presentation that shows them. Wrong-chart choices cost more marks in fieldwork than untidy results do.
