Ontario high school courses, by course code
An Ontario course code is five characters: three letters for the subject, one digit for the grade, and one letter for the course type. MHF4U is Advanced Functions (MHF), Grade 12 (4), university preparation (U). Each page below is written for one code: what the course covers, strand by strand, where students in it get stuck, and how a live AI tutor works through that course with you from your own textbook, notes and assignments.

How Ontario course codes work
The first three letters name the subject
The first letter is the discipline: M for mathematics, S for science, E for English, I for computer studies. The next two narrow it to the course, so MCV is Calculus and Vectors while MHF is Advanced Functions, and SCH is chemistry while SPH is physics.
The digit is the grade
1 is Grade 9, 2 is Grade 10, 3 is Grade 11 and 4 is Grade 12. MPM2D and SNC2D are both Grade 10 courses; MCR3U and SBI3U are both Grade 11.
The last letter is the course type
In Grades 11 and 12 the letter says where the course is meant to lead: U for university preparation, M for university or college, C for college, O for open. In Grades 9 and 10, D marks an academic course and W marks a de-streamed one, which is why the current Grade 9 math course is MTH1W and not the older MPM1D. A university-bound student in Grade 12 math sees mostly U codes; a college-bound one sees C codes such as MAP4C.
Every code on this page is checked against the Ministry of Education’s published course list, most recently in . Grade 9 and 10 codes changed between 2021 and 2024, so a code from an older textbook may no longer be a course. Each course page links to the Ministry’s own page for it.
