MAP4C Foundations for College Mathematics, worked with a live AI tutor

MAP4C is built around problems a person meets outside a math class: a loan amortisation, a roof pitch, a survey result, a growth curve fitted to real data. It is the Grade 12 course most college programs in business, health and technology list, and the personal-finance strand carries more weight than in any other Grade 12 math.     Choosing between linear, quadratic and exponential models for real data, using exponent laws and rates of change, and solving problems with the model you picked.

  • Personal finance

    Annuities, mortgages and loans, the effect of amortisation period and payment frequency, budgeting, and the real cost of owning a vehicle or renting versus buying.

  • Geometry and trigonometry

    Measurement in two and three dimensions, optimising a design under a constraint, and solving triangles that are not right-angled with the sine and cosine laws.

  • Data management

    Reading and critiquing a statistical claim, one- and two-variable data, scatter plots and trend lines, and how a survey's design can bias its result.

Where students get stuck

Which model fits the data

Look at the differences between consecutive outputs. Constant first differences mean linear; constant second differences mean quadratic; a constant ratio between consecutive outputs means exponential. Real data will not be exactly constant, so the question is which pattern is closest, and the tutor can walk that judgement with you on your own table of values.

Reading an amortisation table

Each payment is split between interest on the current balance and a reduction of that balance. Early payments are mostly interest because the balance is large. Changing from monthly to biweekly payments shortens the amortisation because the balance falls slightly sooner each period, which is why the total interest drops by more than the arithmetic suggests at first glance.

Cosine law when the angle is what you want

The cosine law is usually written to find a side, but rearranging it to find an angle is where students stall. Isolate the cosine of the angle: the sum of the squares of the two adjacent sides minus the square of the opposite side, all over twice the product of the adjacent sides. If the result is negative, the angle is obtuse, and that is correct, not an error.

Does the tutor follow the Ontario MAP4C curriculum?

It works from your textbook, your notes and your assignment, and from the four MAP4C strands: mathematical models, personal finance, geometry and trigonometry, and data management. It is not an official Ministry resource.

Is MAP4C accepted for college admission?

Many Ontario college programs list MAP4C as an accepted Grade 12 mathematics course. Some technology and health programs specify a different course, so check the program's own admission requirements.
