ENG4U is the one English course almost every Ontario university program requires, and it is assessed largely on independence: an independent study unit where you choose the novel, a comparative essay across texts, and a culminating task that has to show a critical stance rather than a summary. Oral communication
Listening critically, leading a seminar or discussion with prepared questions, and presenting an argument with evidence to an audience.
Reading and literature studies
Reading challenging literary texts from different periods and cultures, applying critical perspectives, and building an interpretation that accounts for the whole text.
Writing
The extended literary essay with a sustained argument, comparative and persuasive forms, research and citation, and revision at the level of structure as well as sentence.
Media studies
Analysing how media texts construct meaning and audience, and producing a media text with a deliberate perspective.

Where students get stuck
Comparing two texts without writing two separate essays
Organise by idea, not by text. Each body paragraph takes one point of comparison and discusses both texts inside it, ending on what the difference or similarity reveals. An essay that spends its first half on one novel and its second half on the other has no comparison in it until the conclusion, and that is where the mark is lost.
Applying a critical lens without it taking over
A feminist, Marxist or psychoanalytic reading is a question you ask the text, not a conclusion you impose on it. State the lens, ask what it draws attention to, and then let the evidence answer. If every quotation is bent to fit the lens, the reader notices; if the lens shows something the text actually does, the analysis earns the mark.
The independent study unit: choosing and defending a novel
Pick a text with enough in it to sustain an argument, which usually means one you have a reaction to, not one that seemed easy. Read with a question in mind and keep page references as you go. The ISU essay is assessed on the depth of a reading you built without the class, so the notes you take during reading are most of the work.
A conclusion that does more than repeat the thesis
The conclusion should say what the argument means now that it has been made: the implication, the wider claim, the thing the reader should see differently. Restating the three body-paragraph points in reverse order is a summary, and the rubric distinguishes between the two.
