MCR3U Functions, worked through with a live AI tutor
MCR3U is the course where f(x) replaces y and everything becomes a transformation of something simpler. It is also the only Grade 11 course that puts arithmetic and geometric series next to compound interest and annuities, which is why the financial unit catches students who were fine with the algebra. The tutor can walk a transformation, a radian conversion, or an annuity formula on the whiteboard at your pace.
Prerequisite: MPM2D (Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics)
What MCR3U covers
The strands of MCR3U Functions, in our words rather than the Ministry’s. Your teacher’s course outline decides the order and the weight.
Characteristics of functions
Function notation, domain and range, inverses, transformations of the base functions, and solving quadratic and rational equations that come from them.
Exponential functions
Exponent laws with rational exponents, the shape of an exponential graph, and growth and decay problems built on a common ratio.
Discrete functions
Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, recursive definitions, Pascal's triangle, and the compound-interest and annuity formulas that come from geometric series.
Trigonometric functions
The primary and reciprocal ratios for any angle, special triangles, identities, and the graphs of sine and cosine with their transformations.

Where students get stuck
The order of transformations
Stretches and reflections happen before translations, and the horizontal ones are backwards from how they read. In f(2(x − 3)), the graph is compressed toward the y-axis by a factor of two and then shifted right by three. Students who factor the inside first almost always get it; students who read left to right almost never do.
Finding the inverse and then checking it is a function
Swap x and y, solve for y, and you have the inverse relation. Whether it is a function is a separate question answered by the original graph: if a horizontal line crosses it twice, the inverse fails the vertical line test. This is why MCR3U restricts the domain of a quadratic before inverting it, and why an unrestricted answer loses the mark.
Annuities: present value or future value
If the money is being paid in over time and you want the total at the end, it is future value. If a lump sum exists now and is being paid out over time, it is present value. Loans are present value; savings plans are future value. Read the question for which end of the timeline the single amount sits at, and the formula chooses itself.
Why sin(x) = 0.5 has more than one answer
The sine ratio is positive in two quadrants, so a single value corresponds to two angles in one full rotation and infinitely many beyond it. Find the related acute angle from the special triangle, then place it in each quadrant where the sign matches. Writing only the calculator's answer is the most common lost mark in the trigonometry unit.
How a session on MCR3U works
- 1
Bring the actual problem
Share your screen, upload the page, or hold it up to the camera. The tutor reads the MCR3U question itself instead of your retyped version of it.
- 2
Talk it through on the whiteboard
You explain where you got to, out loud. The tutor writes the next step on a shared board while it talks, and asks you to take the one after that.
- 3
Try the next one yourself
Generate a practice set on the same topic, with full worked solutions that show the method rather than only the answer.
It starts in Learn mode: concepts first, the answer as a last resort. The tutor is not a Ministry resource and does not replace your teacher’s course outline.
MCR3U questions
Does the tutor follow the Ontario MCR3U curriculum?
It works from what you bring, your textbook, your notes and your assignment, and from the four MCR3U strands: characteristics of functions, exponential functions, discrete functions and trigonometric functions. It is not an official Ministry resource.
Is MCR3U enough to take MCV4U?
Not on its own. MCV4U requires MHF4U, Advanced Functions, taken before or at the same time. MCR3U is the prerequisite for MHF4U and for MDM4U.
MCR3U or MCF3M?
MCR3U is the university-preparation course and the one required for MHF4U. MCF3M covers a related set of topics with more applied problems and leads to the college pathway; it can also lead to MHF4U. Your guidance office confirms which your intended program expects.
