MHF4U Advanced Functions, worked with a live AI tutor
MHF4U is the Ontario course that programs in science, engineering and business list as a requirement, and it is dense: polynomial and rational functions, logarithms, radian trigonometry with identities, and a final unit that combines functions and previews calculus. Most students who struggle are fine with any one of those and lost by the pace at which they arrive. The tutor works whichever unit is in front of you, on the whiteboard, from your own problem set.

What MHF4U covers
The strands of MHF4U Advanced Functions, in our words rather than the Ministry’s. Your teacher’s course outline decides the order and the weight.
Exponential and logarithmic functions
The logarithm as the inverse of the exponential, the laws of logarithms, solving exponential and logarithmic equations, and modelling with both.
Trigonometric functions
Radian measure, the special angles in radians, the graphs of all six trigonometric functions, compound-angle formulas, and proving identities.
Polynomial and rational functions
End behaviour and turning points, the factor and remainder theorems, polynomial and rational inequalities, and the asymptotes of a rational function.
Characteristics of functions
Average and instantaneous rates of change, combining functions by arithmetic and composition, and comparing the function families side by side.

Where students get stuck
Proving a trigonometric identity
Work one side only, and pick the more complicated side. Convert everything to sine and cosine when nothing else is obvious, look for a Pythagorean identity hiding as one minus a square, and get a common denominator before you cancel anything. An identity proof that moves terms across the equals sign is not a proof, and MHF4U marks it that way.
Radians without a calculator
Memorise the two special triangles and the fact that a full turn is two pi. Every special angle is a multiple of pi over six or pi over four; place it on the unit circle, take the reference angle, and read the sign from the quadrant. Students who convert to degrees first and back again double their arithmetic and their error rate.
Solving logarithmic equations and losing a solution
Bring the logs together using the laws, rewrite in exponential form, solve the resulting polynomial, and then check every candidate in the original equation. A logarithm of a negative number or of zero is undefined, so an answer that makes any argument non-positive is rejected. The check is part of the solution, not an optional extra.
Rational function asymptotes and holes
Factor the numerator and denominator fully first. A factor that cancels is a hole, not an asymptote. A factor that remains in the denominator alone is a vertical asymptote. The horizontal or oblique asymptote depends on the degrees: equal degrees give the ratio of leading coefficients, a numerator one degree higher gives a slanted line by division.
Instantaneous rate of change before you have derivatives
MHF4U asks for the rate of change at a point without calculus. The tool is the average rate over a shrinking interval: compute the slope between the point and a very nearby point, then a nearer one, and watch the values settle. That settling value is what MCV4U will later call the derivative.

Does the tutor follow the Ontario MHF4U curriculum?
It works from what you bring, your textbook, your notes and your assignment, and from the four MHF4U strands: exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, polynomial and rational functions, and characteristics of functions. It is not an official Ministry resource.
Should I take MHF4U before MCV4U or at the same time?
MCV4U's prerequisite allows either. The rate-of-change unit at the end of MHF4U is what the first unit of MCV4U extends, so taking Advanced Functions first is the smoother order if your timetable allows it.
