SNC1W is four sciences in one year, and each unit asks for a different kind of thinking: ecosystems want cause-and-effect chains, chemistry wants naming rules and Bohr diagrams, electricity wants circuit arithmetic, and the space unit wants scale. Where students get stuck
Bohr-Rutherford diagrams and why the shells fill in that order
The first shell holds two electrons, the next two hold eight. Fill from the inside out, and the number in the outer shell tells you the group and predicts how the atom bonds. An atom with one outer electron gives it away; an atom with seven takes one. The diagram is a bonding prediction, not just a drawing.
Naming ionic versus molecular compounds
Metal plus non-metal is ionic: name the metal, then the non-metal with an -ide ending, and no prefixes. Two non-metals is molecular: use prefixes like di- and tri- to say how many of each. Carbon dioxide has a prefix; sodium chloride does not, and mixing the two systems is the most common error on a naming quiz.
Series or parallel: what happens to the bulbs
In series there is one path, so the same current flows through every bulb and adding a bulb dims them all. In parallel each bulb has its own path back to the source, so each gets the full voltage and adding one does not dim the others. Trace the path with a finger before answering; if you can get from one terminal to the other without passing through a component twice, that component is on its own branch.
Food webs and what happens when one species is removed
Follow every arrow that points into the removed species and every arrow that points out. Its predators lose a food source; its prey lose a predator and may grow, then crash when their own food runs short. The exam question is testing whether you trace the chain two steps rather than one.

Does the tutor follow the Ontario SNC1W curriculum?
It works from what you bring, your textbook, your notes and your assignment, and from the SNC1W strands: investigation skills, ecosystems and climate, atoms and compounds, electricity, and space. It is not an official Ministry resource.
SNC1W replaced SNC1D and SNC1P. Does older material still apply?
Much of it overlaps, but the de-streamed course reorganised the units and added climate change and STEM skills expectations. If a resource is labelled SNC1D or SNC1P, check its topics against your course outline before relying on it.
