MTH1W Grade 9 Mathematics, worked through with a live AI tutor
MTH1W is the single Grade 9 math course every Ontario student now takes, which means one classroom holds students who are comfortable with fractions and students who are not. The course moves from number sense through linear relations to a financial-literacy strand that is new to most people arriving from Grade 8. The tutor meets you at the question you actually have, whether that is a negative-exponent rule or a budget table.

Number
Working confidently with integers, fractions, decimals and percents, the laws of exponents, and how the different number systems fit inside one another.
Algebra
Simplifying expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities, and recognising a linear relation from a table, a graph, or a rule.

Collecting and representing data, reading a scatter plot, and deciding whether a trend line says anything worth saying.

Perimeter, area, surface area and volume, the Pythagorean theorem, and how changing one dimension changes the whole shape.

Budgets, the difference between an appreciating and a depreciating purchase, and reading the numbers behind a simple financial decision.

Where students get stuck
Negative exponents and the zero exponent
A negative exponent is not a negative number; it is an instruction to divide. Two to the power of negative three is one over two cubed, which is positive. The zero exponent follows from the same pattern: each time the exponent drops by one you divide by the base, so dropping from two to the one down to two to the zero divides two by two and leaves one. Write the pattern out once and the rule stops being arbitrary.
Which form of a line to use
Slope-intercept form tells you where the line starts and how it climbs, so use it when the problem gives you a starting value and a rate. Two points give you the slope first, then one of them fixes the intercept. Students lose marks by memorising both procedures and never asking which one the question is set up for; the question almost always tells you.
Direct versus partial variation
Both are straight lines. Direct variation passes through the origin, so doubling the input doubles the output. Partial variation has a fixed starting amount, a phone plan with a base fee, so doubling the input does not double the output. Check whether the table has a zero row that reads zero; if it does not, it is partial.
Fractions come back and they do not feel like Grade 8
In MTH1W, fractions show up inside equations and inside expressions with variables, which is where earlier shortcuts break. Clearing denominators by multiplying every term by the lowest common denominator is the move that survives; cross-multiplying only works when the equation is one fraction equals another.

It changes the range of questions in one class, not the tutoring. You can ask for a fraction refresher or push ahead into the algebra that MPM2D expects; the session follows the question you ask rather than a fixed level.

MPM2D, Principles of Mathematics, is the Grade 10 academic course most students take next. The linear relations and algebra strands in MTH1W are what MPM2D builds on.
