SNC2D Grade 10 Science, worked through with a live AI tutor

SNC2D is the last general science course before students choose biology, chemistry or physics, and each unit is a preview of one of those. The chemistry unit introduces balancing and reaction types that SCH3U assumes; the optics unit is the first physics that needs a ruler and a protractor. What SNC2D covers

The strands of SNC2D Science, in our words rather than the Ministry’s. Your teacher’s course outline decides the order and the weight.

  • Biology: tissues, organs and systems of living things

    Cell division and its control, how cells specialise into tissues and organs, and how the systems of a plant or animal depend on one another.

  • Chemistry: chemical reactions

    Writing and balancing equations, the main reaction types, acids and bases, and why conservation of mass forces the balancing in the first place.

  • Earth and space science: climate change

    The natural greenhouse effect, the evidence that the climate is changing, the human contribution, and how models and data are used to study it.

  • Physics: light and geometric optics

    How light reflects and refracts, ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, image characteristics, and the optics of the eye and of everyday instruments.

Where students get stuck

Balancing equations without guessing

Balance the element that appears in the fewest compounds first, leave hydrogen and oxygen for last, and change coefficients only, never subscripts. If you end up with an odd number where you need an even one, double every coefficient and continue. A subscript change makes a different substance, which is why it is marked wrong even when the atoms count.

Which reaction type is this

Two things becoming one is synthesis; one becoming two is decomposition; an element swapping into a compound is single displacement; two compounds trading partners is double displacement; a hydrocarbon plus oxygen giving carbon dioxide and water is combustion. Count the reactants and products first, then look for the pattern; the pattern is the answer.

Ray diagrams for a converging lens

Three rays, and you only need two of them: the ray parallel to the axis refracts through the far focal point, the ray through the centre goes straight, the ray through the near focal point leaves parallel. Where two meet is the image. If they diverge, extend them backwards with dashed lines and the image is virtual. Most lost marks are a ray that changes direction at the wrong surface.

Mitosis versus the cell cycle

Mitosis is one short stage of the cell cycle, the part where the nucleus divides. Most of a cell's life is interphase, when it grows and copies its DNA. Cancer is a failure of the checkpoints that decide whether to enter mitosis, which is why the course puts the two topics together.
