SCH4U opens with organic chemistry, which is unusual, and the naming and reaction rules of that unit are what students remember most. The equilibrium and acid-base unit is where the marks go: ICE tables, the approximation and when it is allowed, buffers, and titration curves.     Oxidation numbers, balancing redox reactions by half-reactions, galvanic and electrolytic cells, standard reduction potentials, and corrosion.

Where students get stuck

ICE tables and when to drop the x

Set the initial row, write the change row as the coefficients times x with the sign from the direction the reaction moves, and add. The approximation of ignoring x in the denominator is allowed only when the initial concentration divided by the constant is large; a common rule is greater than about five hundred. If it fails, solve the quadratic, and SCH4U tests that case on purpose.

Hess's law: flipping and scaling

Line up the target equation, then flip any given equation whose reactant is on the wrong side and change the sign of its enthalpy. Scale each equation so the substances that must cancel do, and multiply the enthalpy by the same factor. Add. The bookkeeping is the whole method; the chemistry is that enthalpy is a state function.

Balancing a redox reaction in acidic solution

Split into two half-reactions, balance every element except hydrogen and oxygen, then oxygen with water, then hydrogen with hydrogen ions, then charge with electrons. Multiply so the electrons match and add. In basic solution do the same, then neutralise the hydrogen ions with hydroxide on both sides. Skipping the charge step is where most answers go wrong.

Naming an organic compound with more than one functional group

Find the longest chain that contains the highest-priority group, number from the end that gives that group the lowest number, then list the other substituents alphabetically with their positions. The priority order is what decides the suffix; everything else is a prefix. Draw the structure before you name it, not after.
