Learn, Practice and Answer modes
Most of the time the complaint about an AI tutor is not that it is wrong — it is that it answered a question you wanted to work out yourself, or that it asked you three questions when you were out of time and just needed the method. The mode switch is the control for that. It sits above the sidebar navigation, it applies to every AI feature in the app at once, and it changes HOW you are answered without changing what the tutor knows about your work.
Find the switch
It is the three-way control near the top of the sidebar, above the navigation, reading Learn / Practice / Answer. On a phone the sidebar is behind the menu button, so the same control sits in the header instead. Whatever you pick is remembered and follows you from page to page.
Learn — teach me how it works
Walks you through the idea behind the question with analogies and small steps, and asks you questions along the way instead of handing over the answer. This is the one to use when the topic itself is new and you are not yet trying to finish anything.
Practice — let me try, then hint
Waits for your attempt, tells you exactly where it went wrong, and gives you the smallest hint that gets you moving. Ask outright and it will show the full solution. This is the mode to revise in, because being briefly stuck is most of what makes revision work.
Answer — just show me the solution
Gives the complete worked solution straight away: every formula, every step, and the final answer. Best used to check work you have already done, or to see the shape of a method before attempting one yourself.
Change it whenever you like, including mid-sentence
The mode is not a setting you commit to. In a live session the tutor picks up the change while you are still talking to it, so you can start in Learn, move to Practice once the idea has landed, and switch again if you run out of time.
Answer mode and academic integrity
Answer mode writes the work for you. Turning in AI-written work as your own may breach your school's academic-integrity policy — use it to check your own work.
Grading deliberately ignores the mode
The AI Grader marks the same way in all three modes. That is a design decision rather than an oversight: if a switch in the sidebar could make the grader more generous, the grade it gave you would be worth nothing. The same applies to lecture notes and session recaps, which record what happened rather than explain it.
Common questions
Does the mode change what the tutor knows about my work?
No. It changes how much it gives away and how it phrases things. Your courses, your homework and your history are the same in all three modes — only the teaching stance changes.
Which mode should I leave it in?
Practice, for most people, most of the time. Learn is better when a topic is genuinely new, and Answer is best treated as a checking tool rather than a default.
Can my teacher tell which mode I used?
The app does not report your mode to anyone. That is exactly why the integrity note matters — the responsibility for how Answer mode gets used sits with you, not with a setting.
Does switching mid-conversation lose the thread?
No. The conversation carries on with everything already said; only the way the next reply is written changes.
