How to use AI to study without cheating: a checkable set of habits
Using AI to study without cheating comes down to what you submit and what you did before you asked. Attempt the problem first, ask for the method rather than the answer, use AI to check a draft you wrote rather than to write one, never submit generated text as your own, and read your school's policy so you know where its line is. A tool that makes those habits the default, rather than one you have to fight, does most of the work for you.

Where is the line, actually?
Most academic-integrity policies draw it at authorship. Getting an explanation of a concept is study; submitting work you did not produce is misconduct. The grey area is everything in between: a hint on a stuck step, a draft edited by AI, an answer you checked against a generated one. Policies differ on the grey area, which is why the first habit below is to read yours.
The useful test is whether you could reproduce the work without the tool. If AI explained the chain rule and you then differentiated the next six functions yourself, you learned it. If it differentiated all six and you copied them, you did not, and the exam will say so regardless of what the policy says.
The five habits
Each of these is a behaviour you can check, not a value you have to hold.
- Attempt first. Write something down, however wrong, before you ask. A tutor that has seen your attempt can tell you where it went wrong; one that has not can only lecture.
- Ask for the method, not the answer. Why does the sign flip, how do I choose the factors, what is this question really asking. The answer to those transfers to the next problem; the answer to the problem does not.
- Check your draft rather than generating one. Write it, then have it marked against the rubric. Accept the fixes you agree with and understand. That is what a good editor does and it is not misconduct anywhere.
- Never submit generated text as your own. This is the bright line in every policy. If a tool can write the whole thing, use that capability to see the shape of an answer, then close it and write yours.
- Read your policy. It takes ten minutes and it is the only source that tells you where your institution draws the line.
Which product behaviours make the habits easy?

What about tools that hide what you did?
There is a category of product marketed as an invisible overlay: it feeds answers during a test or an interview and is designed not to be detected. It is worth naming because it is the anti-pattern. It makes you look capable for ten minutes. A tutor's job is to make you capable, which is why it asks you to solve the next one yourself.
The practical difference is checkable. An overlay is built to be used on graded work without anyone knowing. A labelled mode with a warning at the point of use, that cannot touch how your work is graded, is built so that the choice is yours and visible. A short routine for a graded assignment
Upload the brief and the rubric to an assignment workspace, and ask what each criterion is actually asking for. Attempt the work. When you hit the part that stops you, open a session in Practice mode and talk through that part only. Write the rest. Run the draft through the grader against the rubric, read what is costing marks, fix what you agree with, and submit the version you wrote. Nothing in that routine produces text you did not author, and every step of it is something the product does today.

Is asking an AI to explain a concept cheating?
Under most policies, no. Explanation is study. The line is usually at submitting work you did not produce; check your own institution's policy for its exact wording.
Can my teacher tell which mode I used?
