Something from two years ago never clicked

The real problem is from two years ago

You are stuck on tonight's question, but the actual gap is further back — a rule you learned as a procedure and never as an idea. Everything built on top of it has been slightly unstable ever since, and every year it gets harder to admit.

What this will not do

This is not a diagnosis service. It works out where the gap is by working through problems with you, which means it takes a session rather than a form.

How it actually goes

  1. 1

    Say the thing out loud

"I do not actually know why you flip the sign." You are talking to software; there is nobody to be embarrassed in front of, and that turns out to matter more than it should.

  2. 2

Let it work backwards from where you are stuck

It starts from the question in front of you and traces back to the step you cannot justify. That step is usually the gap, and it is usually not where you thought it was.

  3. 3

Learn it as an idea, not a procedure

The reason it did not stick the first time is almost always that it was taught as a rule to apply. On the whiteboard it gets shown as a thing that is true, with the reason attached.

  4. 4

    Prove it stuck

Practice questions that use it in a few different shapes. Getting the same question right twice proves nothing; getting an unfamiliar one right proves it landed.

Questions people in this situation ask

Is it going to make me feel stupid?

It is built to start where you are. It cannot be impatient, it does not know how old you are, and it has no opinion about how long this should have taken you.

How far back can it go?

As far as it needs to. Going back three years to fix one idea and then moving forward quickly is almost always faster than another year of working around it.
