What does each 4U course actually test?

Paraphrasing the Ministry's course descriptions rather than quoting them, and linking each course to its own page where the strands are set out. The exam questions follow the strands, which is why knowing them is the first step of the plan.

  • Advanced Functions (MHF4U): polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions in radians with identities, and rates of change and combinations of functions. Exams reward moving between the equation, the graph and a table for the same function.
  • Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U): limits and derivatives with their rules, curve sketching and applications of derivatives, and vectors in two and three dimensions including lines and planes. Exams fail students at the setup of an applied problem more than at the differentiation.
  • Data Management (MDM4U): counting, probability and probability distributions, organising and analysing data, and a culminating investigation. Exams test whether you can tell which counting model a problem needs.
  • Chemistry (SCH4U): organic chemistry, structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates, equilibrium, and electrochemistry. Exams ask for the mechanism and the reasoning, not the definition.
  • Physics (SPH4U): dynamics, energy and momentum, gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, the wave nature of light, and modern physics. Exams are diagram-first; the free-body diagram is most of the mark.
  • Biology (SBI4U): biochemistry, metabolic processes, molecular genetics, homeostasis and population dynamics. Exams reward process detail in the right order.
  • English (ENG4U): reading and literature, writing, oral communication and media studies, usually with a culminating essay graded against a rubric. The rubric is the study guide.

How do you find what you keep missing?

Not by rereading the notes. Generate a practice quiz on one narrow topic, work it without checking, and read every worked solution afterwards. A set on logarithmic equations alone, rather than on Advanced Functions in general, tests one thing eight times and shows you precisely where the method breaks. Do that for each strand and the list of what you keep missing writes itself.

Bring the past tests. Photograph the unit tests the teacher handed back and upload them: the tutor reads the marked errors and can say what pattern they share, which is usually one misconception showing up in five places rather than five separate gaps.

How do you work a topic that will not land?

In a live session, with the page on the camera and the working on the whiteboard. For Advanced Functions and Calculus, ask the tutor to draw the graph before any algebra; for Physics, the free-body diagram; for Chemistry, the mechanism arrows; for Biology, the pathway as a sequence.
